Meta Is Testing Tools For Horizon Horizon Creators Sell Virtual Items

“As part of our ongoing commitment to support creators, we’re beginning to test several new tools that will enable creators to experiment with different ways to monetize what they’re building in Horizon Worlds. While we’re launching this today as a test with a handful of creators to get their feedback, these types of tools are steps toward our long-term vision for the metaverse where creators can earn a living and people can purchase digital goods, services, and experiences.” Opens Meta’s press statement.

In short, a “handful” of Horizon creators will be able to sell virtual items. As The Verge wrote, “The idea is that creators can sell everything from access to a VIP section of their world to virtual items like jewelry or a special basketball, according to Meaghan Fitzgerald, the product marketing director for Horizon. Participants in the US will also be able to earn money from a $10 million creator fund Meta recently set up to reward creators with the most engaging worlds.”

According to Insider, “Meta and its CEO Mark Zuckerberg have previously criticized Apple for charging developers a 30% fee for in-app purchases via the App Store. Zuckerberg said in a Facebook post in November that Meta was making changes to help metaverse creators evade Apple’s App Store fee. Meta will charge creators fees of up to 47.5% to sell virtual wares in its metaverse – significantly more than Apple charges developers on its App Store.”
